Choosing a Pathway
Choosing a Pathway
At David W. Butler High School we have seven specific pathways. Each pathway below shows a detailed 4 year plan. Student will choose from the seven pathways (Architecture & Interior Design, Fashion Design, General Management, Information Technology, Marketing, PLTW Biomedical, and Achitecture & Engineering) in their 8th grade year (during registration). Students completing a Pathway allow for additional opportunities to students (certification and/or work-based learning opportunities).
finding your career interests
Before choosing a pathway you may want to explore the many careers available. You can use NCCareers.org, CPCC Career Coach, or any other career interest inventory to explore careers, incomes, availability of jobs, and required education, and more. See your Career Development Coordinator or visit the Resources page to explore your options.
NCCareers.org and CPCC Career Coach use current and relevant information for careers in your area (Mecklenburg and surrounding areas).

Benefits of a career pathway
Students that elect to complete a Career Pathway, whether it is one of the six Career Pathways or any of the Career Pathways within the 16 Career Clusters, are afforded many opportunities.
WORK-BASED LEARNING
Students who identify their pathways in their Freshman year will be part of a select group of students who will be chosen first for internships (both paid and unpaid), mentoring, apprenticeship, and job shadow opportunities.
CERTIFICATION
Being a Career and Technical Education Concentrator allows students to complete the WorkKeys assessment, which provides a career and college readiness industry certification upon successful completion. You can find more information about this assessment here. In addition to the WorkKeys industry certification these students will be eligible for additional certification in their career track.
CAREER ENDORSEMENT ON HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA
If students are CTE Concentrators, meaning they have 4 electives in a CTE Career Cluster, gain a GPA of 2.6 or higher unweighted and at least one industry credential: WorkKeys CRC at Silver level or above or another industry credential aligned with a CTE course of study, and complete four years of Math (including Math I, II, III and a fourth mathematics) then they will have a Career Endorsement on their High School Diploma after graduation (North Carolina State Board of Education, 2016).

CTE Concentrator
Butler High School offers many opportunities for students to get closer to their career goals. One of these ways is to become a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Concentrator. A CTE Concentrator is a student who has earned four or more technical credits in a Career Cluster, at least one of which is a "completer" or second level course. For a look into these course options see your CDC.
Butler High School currently offers courses that can fulfill 10 out of the 16 Career Clusters, with the addition of our Career and College Promise Program, this number increases to 15. If you are interested in achieving this goal and participating in our WorkKeys assessment speak to your School Counselor or your Career Development Coordinator (CDC).
